Positioning decides how customers remember you compared with alternatives.
Choose a specific target customer
Positioning starts with deciding who you serve best. 'Everyone who needs marketing' is not a target; 'D2C beauty brands selling on Nykaa and Shopify' is. A focused target makes it easier to design products, write messages and choose channels.
Define the category in customers' words
Customers need to know what you are before they care how you are different. Use category language they already understand, such as 'cloud kitchen', 'dental clinic' or 'performance marketing agency', and add a qualifier that sets context.
Identify a difference that matters
Find something customers value and competitors do not offer as well: faster delivery, regional expertise, a specific method or a guarantee you can actually honour. A difference that customers do not care about is not positioning.
Gather proof
Back your claims with evidence such as certifications, published methods, genuine reviews, verified client results shared with permission, or awards. Proof turns positioning from a claim into a belief.
Apply it everywhere
Use the positioning to guide website headlines, ad copy, sales decks, hiring and partnerships. Test whether a new customer can explain what you do and why you are different after visiting your website for 30 seconds.
