Perfect attribution is impossible; useful attribution is achievable.
Compare several views of the truth
Ad platforms, GA4 and your sales records will never match exactly, because they use different attribution windows and methods. Compare them side by side and look for consistent trends rather than exact numbers.
Ask customers directly
Add an optional 'How did you hear about us?' question to forms, checkouts or sales calls. Self-reported attribution captures word of mouth, podcasts and creator content that tracking misses.
Run simple holdout tests
Pause a channel in one city or for one product line for a few weeks and compare sales with similar areas. Holdout tests show incremental impact more reliably than click-based attribution.
Track blended metrics
Monitor total enquiries, total revenue and marketing efficiency ratio (MER) over time. If blended results improve when you add spend to a channel, it is probably contributing.
Make decisions with directional evidence
Small teams cannot wait for perfect data. Combine the evidence available, make a reasonable decision, and set a date to review it.
