Redesigns often cause traffic drops because URLs and content change without planning.
Benchmark before you change anything
Export organic landing pages, rankings for priority keywords, backlinks to top URLs and Search Console performance for the last twelve months. Without a benchmark you cannot tell whether the redesign caused a change or what to fix.
Map every old URL
List all indexed URLs from Search Console, your sitemap and a crawl, then map each to the most relevant new URL. Pages with traffic or backlinks need careful matches; pages you are removing should redirect to the closest relevant page, not the home page.
Implement single-step 301 redirects
Use permanent server-side redirects and avoid chains, where one URL redirects to another that redirects again. Test redirects on staging and again immediately after launch with a crawler.
Keep valuable content and metadata
Content that ranks well should be carried over, improved rather than cut. Review titles, H1s and internal links on key pages so relevance is not lost during design changes.
Monitor closely after launch
For four to eight weeks, watch Search Console coverage and performance, 404 reports, server logs and rankings. Fix problems quickly; most migration losses come from issues that went unnoticed for weeks.
