Keyword research is less about finding the biggest numbers and more about understanding what people mean when they search. In India this also means accounting for Hinglish, regional languages and voice search.
Start from customers, not tools
List the problems customers describe on calls, in WhatsApp messages and in reviews. Note the exact words they use, including Hinglish phrases such as 'sasta' or 'best near me'. These seed terms usually reveal intent more accurately than tool suggestions alone.
Expand with free and paid tools
Use Google autocomplete, People Also Ask, Google Keyword Planner and Search Console's queries report. Third-party tools help estimate volumes and difficulty, but treat numbers as directional. In smaller cities, tools often show zero volume for terms that still bring real enquiries.
Classify intent
Group keywords as informational (how, what, why), commercial (best, top, reviews), transactional (price, buy, near me) and navigational (brand names). Transactional terms belong on service or product pages; informational terms suit guides. Mixing intents on one page makes it harder to rank.
Account for language and script
Many Indians search in Hindi, Tamil or Bengali, sometimes typed in Roman script. Check whether competitors rank with regional-language pages. If your customers search in a regional language, a properly translated page often faces less competition than English.
Map keywords to pages
Assign one primary keyword cluster to each page and keep a simple spreadsheet. This prevents cannibalisation and shows gaps, such as a high-value service without a dedicated page. Review the map every quarter using Search Console data.

Ask on WhatsAppFrequently asked questions
Should I target high-volume keywords first?
Not usually. Lower-volume, high-intent keywords often convert better and rank faster.
Do keyword densities matter?
No fixed density helps. Use terms naturally and cover the topic thoroughly.
